Attendance at Bengals training camp

I made a three hour drive to Georgetown College to watch the Bengals training session. I arrived just as the team was getting ready for the 9 a.m. practice session. The practice was very well attended with what I estimate to be around 5,000 people. Between the morning and evening session, it was perhaps the best attended Bengals training camp practice ever.

Once camp broke around 11 a.m., I killed time by walking along Main Street  visiting an antique store, an art co-op and the Georgetown & Scott County Museum.

The second session began around 6:00.  I estimate the attendance to be around 10,000. One thing is for sure: not only are Bengals fans wanting to see another playoff appearance, they want to win and go all the way. There hasn’t been this much excitement about an upcoming season in about 20 years.  Now the talking heads and pundits are cautiously saying that Baltimore or Pittsburgh will win the division. That is fine by me. I like being an underdog.

Basically the special teams units came out and worked through their drills for about 30 minutes.

Then the defensive unit went over to the practice field while the offense conducted passing drills on the main field. The fans certainly enjoyed the deep passing plays. While I enjoyed it, I was more interested in how Reggie Kelly was faring and the reps that Jordan Palmer and J.T. Sullivan were getting. Just as Jon Kitna was crucial for Carson Palmer’s development, Kelly will be essential in the development of Jermaine Gresham and Chase Coffman. Gresham should be signed to a deal any day now. (Update: Gresham was signed to a five-year deal) I expect it will be in the neighborhood of 5 years for around $15 million. The offense and defense also did basic drills as a full unit.

I left around 8 because I wanted to get home at a decent time. All in all, it was a good day. Now it is a matter of seeing how it all turns out this year. A Super Bowl Trophy would be nice.
